OXa is designed to operate through IK Multimedia’s Syntronik plug-in – which packs additional capabilities such as 4-part multis and splits, arpeggiators and more. Present for both voices is the signature unison mode, which gives you up to 16 oscillators and 8 filters to be stacked into a single, gloriously dense monophonic voice – akin to the brass-like intro of Van Halen’s Jump. Recently, DiscoDSP released a software emulation of Oberheim’s polyphonic analog powerhouse, named the OB-Xd. I t has been used on classic songs by artists such as Herbie Hancock and Queen, amongst others. Mac Intel CPU only (minimum 2 GHz recommended). The OB-X from Oberheim is a storied 80’s synth. In keeping close to the source material, the OB-Xa voice swaps out the cross-modulation feature for a pitch envelope control, for brass-like attack scoops. A great emulation of the OB-6 synth, which I have the hardware here for many years. Like the original, this emulation is equipped with cross-modulation capabilities that allow its oscillators to achieve inharmonic saturation and signature bell-like FM tones. Its OB-X voice packs two oscillators that can be independently set to either sawtooth or square, and fed into an Oberheim 2-pole low-pass filter. Syntronik OXa packs a sound library of 6500 samples and 126 instruments – all based on the timeless Oberheim OB-X and OB-Xa polyphonic synths.
